Apart
This week was very sad, up until Saturday afternoon at 4:30 when Angela's flight arrived in Baltimore and she ran into Karl's waiting arms. Well, actually, he snuck up behind her and tried to scare her, but then they hugged each other for 43 minutes and 26 seconds. Because that's how long the baggage took.
Anyway, Karl was in D.C. this week while Angela was in Orem. We missed each other a lot and it just got harder as the week went on. But we still managed to be somewhat productive. Monday, Karl went to his first day at his externship. He found it very interesting. It's a telecommunications firm so they work with a lot of cell phone and wireless and broadcast companies and the FCC, doing all sorts of things Karl thinks sound fun. On Monday, though, he got introduced to a lot people and forgot their names. He also got two projects to work on. He also spent an hour and half each way commuting (his dad took him to Vienna and he caught the Metro in to Foggy Bottom). Believe it or not, this was actually the shortest amount of time he spent commuting all week, because he had to try other options the rest of the week. He tried catching the rail from Manassas Park and then catching a bus from L'Enfant, as well as catching the rail and then catching the Metro from L'Enfant. They're both pretty expensive options, but since the latter is shorter and he gets the opportunity to read or take naps, that's what he decided on.
Meanwhile, Angela hung out at her parent's on Monday. She instant messaged with Karl for a few hours (we got the webcam working, so it was more like a video telephone), then went to sleep and woke up and got a filling. So much fun! She spent the rest of Tuesday visting teaching or being visiting taught, and then she IMd with Karl again.
On Tuesday, as part of his first assignment, Karl went to a big meeting put on by a company Karl can't mention and attended by a lot of fancy looking people in suits. The lawyer from the firm that would have usually gone was busy, so he went and took notes. Karl was a little intimidated until he suddenly realized that no one there knew he didn't fit in (besides the fact that he was half their age), so if he just pretended like he knew what was going on he'd be just fine. And actually, he figured things out pretty quickly, thanks to a lot of background research he did on the train. He also had fun catching a cab to and from the place (he hadn't done that before), and then trying to get accounting to pay for it. Then on Wednesday he wrote a memo on the meeting and finished the other project—which should have been really short, but Karl's an intern and knows nothing about telecommunications law. He also ate a lot of donuts—they had free donuts and ice cream and pizza and sandwiches all week. Not to mention the couple of lunches the partners and associates treated Karl too [yeah, seafood galore!]. But now Karl's afraid of how much he weighs.
Wednesday, Angela continued to be very busy at work, doing month end reports and tidying things up for her upcoming absence. Then she ran a lot of errands after work and was surprisingly busy getting ready to go and doing laundry and stuff. And of course she video conferenced a lot with Karl. This is how Thursday went for her as well, but she managed to squeeze in a haircut by Heather. Then she and Heather had sausage and pineapple pizza and watched "What a Girl Wants" in our basement theater, which is very nice now that it temporarily includes Becky and Wayne's couch and office chair, who loaned them to us while they're gone for the summer.
Karl meanwhile had a pretty boring day at work. He had a few more assignments and then had nothing to do for the last half of the day. He still didn't have any work on Friday morning, so he went around bringing all the partners and associates and made it known that he was perfectly willing to do their busy work. So finally, this got him a few more assignments in the afternoon.
Angela dealt with "goopy" customers all day at work. It was not an enjoyable day, and she had to stay an hour late to take care of them. But she left straight from there to her parent's house where she had yummy dinner and went to see "To Kill a Mockingbird" at the Hale Center Theater. She loved it. But what she loved more was going to sleep that night and then waking up in the morning and going to Baltimore, where as we've already noted, Karl picked her up. And we lived happily ever after.
The rest of the weekend, we've just been adjusting to life living in Karl parent's basement, enjoying Mother's Day, eating a yummy BBQ brisket, moving in, and watching Lemony Snicket for the first time. It's been a lot more fun than being separated. So the moral of the story is ... well, you can figure it out.
The End
